Developmental Educator Support for Children Aged 9–12 Transitioning to a New School

Driving Positive Developmental Change

When your child turns nine, an Everyday Independence developmental educator will take over from your key worker, building on what we know about your family to plan paediatric therapy that drives positive change through primary school.

They’ll focus on supporting your child through transitions, like starting a new school or grade, while helping them build friendships, tackle social challenges, and meet increasing educational demands.

At Everyday Independence, developmental educators act as your child’s primary therapist, leading and coordinating their therapy journey. They’ll also connect you with other supports, such as allied health services, education resources, mental health professionals, and community services, ensuring your child receives holistic support.

This service is currently offered by the Central AdelaideSouthern Adelaide and Bayside therapy hubs.

How a Developmental Educator Supports You

Developmental educators will:

  • Assess your child’s current developmental level and unique needs
  • Work with you, your family, previous key worker (if possible), and teachers to create a transition plan
  • Develop a customised plan that continues social skills development, with a focus on friendships
  • Identify and address any environmental barriers that may impact a successful transition
  • Implement strategies to support your child to adapt to each new grade
  • Provide ongoing support and adjustments to therapy plans to ensure progress.
