Ben’s Independence in Motion – Early Childhood Key Worker Support
Six-year-old Ben is a bright and determined young boy who loves learning, spending time with his friends and sharing his passion for dinosaurs. He enjoys problem solving and exploring new challenges.
Ben’s family connected with Everyday Independence seeking early childhood intervention to help him build independence in everyday activities and prepare for starting kindergarten. Ben lives with arthrogryposis which impacts movement in his joints and meant he relied on his family for movement and everyday tasks.
Given Ben’s goals around movement, mobility and assistive technology, we matched his family with a key worker who is also a physiotherapist. Working alongside Ben and his family was a child and family team that included early childhood key worker and physiotherapist Michael and habit coach Hayleigh. Our team work closely with Ben’s external occupational therapist and assistive technology provider.
Together with Ben’s family, the team supported him to build his participation across the places he spends his time and become more confident using assistive technology.
As part of his support, Michael completed an assessment and prescribed a customised wheelchair to help Ben move around more independently at home, school and community environments. Ben’s team also introduced equipment including a customised transfer box and foam ramp to help him move between the floor and his wheelchair independently.
Through regular opportunities to practise skills during daily activities, and with support from his family and therapy team, Ben gradually became more confident and comfortable using his wheelchair across different environments.
Over time, Ben has continued to build confidence and independence in everyday life. He is now enjoying school, spending time with his friends and participating in a range of school activities including cross country, athletics carnivals and science class.
