Yahya’s Steps Towards Employment

Building Skills for What’s Important to Him

With employment among his goals, Yahya has been building employment skills with NDIS employment support through practical activities connected to his interests.

Twenty-year-old Yahya enjoys cooking, learning through hands-on experiences and spending time in his community. With employment among his goals, he has been working alongside employment coach Cailei to practise skills for work and everyday life, using his NDIS funding.

Through Everyday Independence’s youth employment program, Yahya has been exploring workplace activities connected to his interests, strengths and goals.

Building Skills Through Meaningful Activities

Yahya wanted to strengthen skills relevant to future work, including handling money, following instructions and completing tasks in sequence.

Employment coach Cailei worked alongside Yahya to plan activities that gave him opportunities to practise these skills in familiar and engaging ways.

The activities were shaped around what Yahya enjoys and the skills he wants to develop, helping him connect each experience with his employment goals.

Putting Skills into Practise

One of Yahya’s favourite activities is cooking, making it a natural way to build and practise new skills.

During sessions, baking activities provide opportunities to follow recipes, organise ingredients, manage time and complete tasks independently. These experiences help Yahya develop practical skills that can be transferred across many aspects of daily life, including future employment pathways.

Yahya has also had opportunities to learn about workplace routines and responsibilities through experiences in his local community. These experiences allow him to explore different environments, practise workplace-related skills and build confidence in new situations.

By connecting skill development to activities he enjoys, Yahya is continuing to take positive steps towards the future he wants for himself.

I just love seeing participants achieve the goals that they set out to. Every win is a win, even if it’s big or small and I just love seeing the participants’ faces light up when they’ve had a small win.

How we Support Young People

Every young person has different strengths, interests and ideas about their future.

Everyday Independence’s youth teams work alongside young people aged 15–24 to build skills and confidence for work and everyday life. Support is personalised around what is important to each young person and the areas in which they would like to become more independent.

Depending on their goals, support needs and NDIS funding, a young person may receive help to understand their employment options, explore suitable pathways, practise workplace skills or participate in real-world learning experiences.

Our youth employment and vocational services include:

Support to understand NDIS employment funding

We can help young people and their families understand relevant employment supports and explore whether their current funding reflects their employment goals.

Vocational assessments

A vocational assessment explores a young person’s strengths, interests, support needs and preferred environments. It can provide practical recommendations and possible pathways towards employment, education or further skill development.

Youth employment program

Our youth employment program supports young people to build skills for work and everyday life. Activities may include developing workplace routines, practising communication, exploring different types of work and participating in work experience where available.

Psychosocial recovery coaching

Psychosocial recovery coaching supports young people living with psychosocial disability to build capacity, navigate services and take steps towards goals that are important to them.

Our team works alongside each young person to build on their strengths, practise useful skills and explore meaningful next steps towards work and greater everyday independence.

Together, our team works with young people to build capability, create opportunities and take steps towards what’s important to them.
