Elliot Builds Confidence and Coordination Through Play
Five-year old Elliot* is a bright and energetic young boy who enjoys being active, spending time outdoors, and engaging with the people around him. He is motivated by movement and enjoys opportunities to explore what his body can do in play.
Elliot’s family reached out to Everyday Independence seeking early childhood intervention to increase his participation in everyday activities. At times, Elliot experienced challenges with emotional regulation and body coordination which made it harder to join in some activities with his peers.
Elliot’s support was shaped around his strengths, curiosity and love of movement.
Key worker Weiyuw worked with Elliot and his family to introduce strategies that could support emotional regulation during everyday routines. These included breathing activities, visual cues and planned movement breaks.
By sharing strategies and working together, Elliot’s family and practitioners were able to use a consistent approach across home, his learning environment and the community.
Growing confidence to participate
Over time, Elliot’s family noticed that he was becoming more willing to try unfamiliar activities and participate with his peers. They also felt increasingly confident using the strategies developed with his team when challenges arose.
Elliot continues to explore new activities, practise his skills and share his achievements with the people around him.
“Elliot’s determination and joyful spirit shine through. With the right supports around him, he shows a willingness to keep trying and to share his achievements with others. His journey highlights the importance of building on strengths, supporting families and creating opportunities for children to participate in ways that are meaningful to them.”

Early childhood supports
An early childhood key worker is your family’s main point of contact and plan and delivers much of your child’s support through everyday activities and routines. They take the time to understand what is important to your child and family, then bring in occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists and other practitioners when their expertise is needed. This gives your family one coordinated team working together to support your child at home, in their learning environment and in the community.
