Roger’s Journey Using Conversation Cards
This Speech Pathology Week, we’re celebrating the life-changing impact of communication. The theme, Impact Through Communication, highlights something we can easily take for granted – that being able to communicate is a basic human right.
Roger*, a 54-year-old NDIS participant, has been exploring new ways to build his confidence in everyday conversations.
He works with his Everyday Independence speech pathologist, Emily, on skills such as starting and maintaining conversations with others.
Together, they created flashcards with a topic on one side and related questions on the other. After practicing with Emily, Roger’s support team at his day program were shown how to use the cards with him so he could try them out in different settings.
A support worker later shared that Roger had enjoyed using the cards with her. More recently, she observed him greeting other participants and joining conversations, such as asking questions about a birthday. These observations highlight how collaborative approaches between therapy and support teams can open up opportunities for everyday communication practice.
Our Commitment – The Everyday Way
At Everyday Independence, we call our approach the Everyday Way. It means therapy happens in the places where life unfolds, at home, in the workplace, and out in the community. By working in these environments, and as part of a connected team, we make sure support is practical, meaningful, and creates lasting outcomes.
This Speech Pathology Week, we acknowledge the dedication of our speech pathologists who make a difference every day. Their work helps people live to their full potential by ensuring that communication remains a right, not a privilege.
