Leigh’s First Job Opportunity
Speech Pathology Week 2025 celebrates the many ways speech pathologists create Impact Through Communication. Today, we’re celebrating opportunity through communication and how speech pathology supports teenagers to build skills that help them work toward their personal goals.
Leigh*, 13, had a goal of gaining part-time employment after school and on weekends.
Her speech pathology sessions focused on developing practical communication skills — from writing a resume and applying online, to practicing interview conversations and strengthening interpersonal communication.
Through her determination and persistence, Leigh has been working towards her goal of gaining part time employment. Recently she started her first part-time job at Subway – an exciting milestone that has opened opportunities to build independence, meet new people, and gain work experience.
Leigh will continue to work with her speech pathologist to further develop her communication and interpersonal skills to build her confidence engaging with new people.
Our Commitment – The Everyday Way
At Everyday Independence, we call our approach the Everyday Way. It means therapy happens in the places where life unfolds, at home, in the workplace, and out in the community. By working in these environments, and as part of a connected team, we make sure support is practical, meaningful, and creates lasting outcomes.
This Speech Pathology Week, we acknowledge the dedication of our speech pathologists who make a difference every day. Their work helps people live to their full potential by ensuring that communication remains a right, not a privilege.
