Jason Speaks Up For Inclusion
This Speech Pathology Week, we’re celebrating the many ways speech pathologists create Impact Through Communication.
Across Australia, our speech pathologists support people to develop their communication skills in ways that help them connect with family, friends, and their community. This includes working with people who experience a stutter, a slower rate of speech, or other communication differences. Our role is to provide practical strategies and supports that can make everyday conversations, social activities, and community participation feel more accessible and confident.
Today, we’re highlighting how speech pathology can support young adults to build confidence and navigate challenges in their everyday lives. Jason* is 19 and enjoys spending time with his friends. Jason works with his speech pathologist on strategies to support communication fluency.
Like many people with communication differences, Jason sometimes faces challenges when out in the community. Together with his speech pathologist, Jason has been developing strategies to support his speech, as well as ways to manage difficult interactions. These include leaning on the support of his friends, using an assistance card, and explaining his communication style to others when needed.
In recent sessions, Jason has been reflecting on how he is developing more self-awareness and confidence in these moments, and how he can draw on strategies to feel supported in situations that once felt overwhelming.
Experience The Benefits of a Team Approach
At Everyday Independence, our speech pathologists work as part of an team that may include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, behaviour support practitioners, key workers, developmental educators and habit coaches. Together, they provide therapy in the places people spend their time, helping people build new skills as part of their everyday routines. We call this the Everyday Way and it’s all about making your NDIS funds go further.
