Supporting Michael’s Communication Through Change

In celebration of Speech Pathology Week 2026, we’re recognising how speech pathologists support communication, choice and participation in everyday life.

Speech pathologists can work alongside people with disability to explore communication strategies, make information more accessible and support participation in everyday decisions. For Michael*, this became particularly important when he was preparing to move into a new home.

Michael began working alongside a speech pathologist to explore communication strategies that could support him to understand important information and participate in decisions about his everyday life.

Supporting Michael Through a Change of Home

While living in his previous home, Michael was looking for more opportunities to participate in activities and experiences that were important to him.

When Michael was preparing to move to a new home, his speech pathologist worked alongside him to make information about the move more accessible.

Together, they explored communication supports that could help Michael understand what was happening, prepare for upcoming changes and participate in conversations about the move.

This included social stories, Key Word Sign and communication boards, which were used to present information in ways that worked for Michael.

Communication, Connection and Participation

Communication is about more than words. It can help people understand what is happening, express their preferences, make choices, build relationships and participate in their communities.

Since moving into his new home, Michael has continued to take part in activities that are meaningful to him. He enjoys spending time outdoors, walking in nature, connecting with people in his community and building relationships with trusted support workers.

These experiences offer Michael opportunities to connect with others and communicate in ways that work for him.

How Speech Pathologists Support Communication

Everyday Independence’s speech pathologists work alongside children, young people and adults to support communication, connection and participation in everyday life.

Support is shaped around each person’s goals, communication preferences and everyday routines. It may include exploring communication systems, supporting understanding and expression, strengthening self-advocacy, and helping family members and support teams communicate in ways that work for the person.

Our speech pathologists work as part of a person’s therapy team when their knowledge and skills could support the person’s goals, This may include working alongisde occupational therapistsphysiotherapistsbehaviour support practitionerskey workers and youth lead practitioners.
