Having meaningful ways to spend your time has a great impact on your quality of life. Hobbies, interests and having regular connection to your community are part of enjoying an everyday life. You gain many benefits from trying out different activities and selecting hobbies that really interest you. Benefits can include:

  • Making and keeping friends
  • Building self confidence
  • Finding ways of relaxing or relieving stress
  • Avoiding boredom
  • Fostering creativity
  • Developing skills and knowledge

Our therapists work with you, your family and support network to help you find hobbies and activities they would like to pursue like music, art, sport, craft, dance, gardening or photography and support you to engage in those activities. Sometimes it is about accessing the right group to join or educating those who run the groups about simple things they can do to make the activity more inclusive for a person with a disability.

Our therapists also support you to engage in hobbies and interests by assisting you with strategies for overcoming behavioural or physical challenges that might be barriers to participation. This can include developing the social skills, improving motor skills to do the activity or accessing assistive technology to give you the tools you need to participate.
