In celebration of Speech Pathology Week, we check in with Dave. Dave has gone from strength to strength over the past three years, and his smile says it all.
Dave owns a lawn mowing and garden maintenance business named Dave Does Lawns, which he runs with help from his support workers. When Dave’s not working on his business, he’s making pot plant holders to sell at markets, getting out and about with his support worker, going on day trips and weekends away. He loves a good chat!
Dave wanted to feel more confident when communicating with people at work and when socialising on the weekend. He’s been working with Everyday Independence Speech Pathologist, Kate during regular speech therapy sessions to develop his strengths and improve his spoken language, conversational and listening skills. Incorporating therapy into Dave’s everyday routine was key to helping him progress his communication skills steadily. He’s now much more confident when speaking with his friends, family and his customers.
Kate also supported Dave to use more features on his mobile phone, so he can stay in touch with friends and family, check the weather forecast, and confirm his work schedule with his workers. What’s more, he can now search for new places to visit on the weekend and listen to music while he’s on the go!
Improving Dave’s communication skills and using technology to stay connected with his customers, friends, and family has opened even more possibilities. We really look forward to checking in with Dave again to hear what other personal goals he’s achieved.
We firmly believe that communication is everyone’s right. Supporting people to improve their communication skills improves their ability to participate more in all aspects of life.
