Huge Congratulations to Therapy Consultants, April O’Neil and Claire Dalliston on the acceptance of their paper to the OT Exchange 2022. Entitled Is Interdisciplinary Therapy an Effective Way to Prevent Participants Sitting on a Waitlist? Using a Therapy Consultant Service Delivery Model to Change the Game, we really couldn’t be more proud of this achievement which brings to the fore the need for real innovation if we’re to significantly reduce waitlists across the industry.
April and Claire highlight the industry recognised challenge faced by participants across Australia to access timely allied health therapy services. In addition, they are quick to point out in their paper that “capacity building and early access therapy is a key strategy for a sustainable NDIS” which underpins the need for workable solutions to be found to this ongoing issue.
The response at Everyday Independence has been to appoint Therapy Consultants to bridge the gap for those seeking support, and to ensure therapists are able to reach as many participants with the right level of support, as quickly as possible.
The Therapy Consultant model is relatively new and was only implemented at Everyday Independence in 2021. Despite the recency of its introduction, the early signs are promising, particularly in providing high impact support to participants with complex needs.
April & Claire point out that “for our therapists, having access to a Therapy Consultant during the initial stages of the assessment process allows them to feel skilled & supported to see participants that they may not have felt equipped to have seen previously” This is obviously a wonderful developmental opportunity for early-career clinicians, who are not the only ones who stand to gain of course. In the words of a participant at Everyday Independence “the Therapy Consultant provided guidance for me to dream bigger and create a path to achieve my goals.”
We can’t wait to hear the full presentation at the OT Exchange Event in Melbourne on 9 and 10 June.
