Steph Weller recently joined the Everyday Independence team as a physiotherapist with our Albury team. Relocating from Adelaide at the beginning of this year, Steph has fallen in love with Albury’s relaxed feel and its people.

Steph was inspired to become a physiotherapist as a teenager after working closely with a physiotherapist after recovering from scoliosis surgery. She experienced firsthand the positive impact that physiotherapy can have on a person’s mobility and decided that she wanted to help others to achieve their goals.

Steph spent the first five years of her career working with people with a variety of physical challenges to broaden her experience. She has supported people in rehab, aged care, hospitals, and in the disability sector, but it was through her work with children, babies and their families that Steph found her special interest.

“I believe everything about being a physiotherapist suits who I am. I’m very much a people person. I like being active and having fun and enjoy helping people achieve what is really important to them.

Whether that be to help a child kick a ball, support a person with non-physical disabilities to become confident participating in physical activity, help an elderly person to prevent falls, or support a person living with pain to improve their functional activities.”

Sometimes motivation and confidence are barriers for a person achieving their goals, and me being a part of that goal and showing them their potential and what they can do already is one of the greatest supports I can offer.

Steph uses a range of evidence-based techniques and therapies to help people with disabilities to reach physical milestones, manage pain, and improve their health and wellbeing. She is also trained in recommending equipment for helping people to move safely in the home and community.

The biggest thing that the people I work with has taught me is to never underestimate the power of a deep conversation. I’ve had many good chats with the person I’m supporting during their therapy session and they often tell me how much they’ve appreciated the chance to share their story with me.”

Outside of work, Steph relaxes with a good novel with a cup of tea, regular Pilates classes and catching up with family. She loves to travel and experience other cultures and cuisines and is a huge foodie.
