We introduce April O’Neill, Occupational Therapist and Team Leader for the Gold Coast team in Queensland.

From the first week in February, Everyday Independence will be expanding our services and opening a therapy hub on the Gold Coast. April will be leading a  team of multi-disciplinary therapists who will support people with a wide range of physical, social and intellectual disabilities and their families to focus on specific needs and situations to achieve their goals.

April is passionate about people having access to ‘just enough’ support at the right time in the right environment. She values the importance of creating opportunities to enable people to participate in meaningful activities.

We asked April a few questions about what good therapy looks like for her and what she is most looking forward to in her new role as Team Leader of the Gold Coast team.

What does good therapy look like to you?

Putting the person at the centre. They are the expert in their lives, and I am there to facilitate and support them to do things more easily and safely.
As an OT I believe great therapy is not being an ‘expert’ or coming in with solutions but finding out what is important to the person and creating capable environments around the person to change what is not working so well.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role as Team Leader for the Gold Coast team?

The NDIS brings great opportunities for the Gold Coast. I will be relocating to the Gold Coast team from NSW where I have supported NDIS participants who have been on the scheme for several years. I will use my learnings to support people to achieve positive outcomes and transition onto the NDIS.

What is your focus as the team leader?

To support the therapists on the Gold Coast to deliver a unique therapy product based on best available evidence that meets the demand of people living with a disability. Using a social model of disability, we aim to create capable environments to support people with a disability to reach their goals.
